In the hustle and bustle of urban hubs like Jakarta and the charm of semi-urban gems such as Malang, Indonesia's youth are redefining how they live, consume, and express themselves. Social trends like thrifting, "healing" travel, and hobby-driven lifestyles aren't just fads—they're reflections of a deeper quest for purpose, identity, and meaningful connections. Insights from focus group discussions conducted by RB Consulting in November 2024 among college students and first jobbers in Jakarta and Malang reveal some insights.
Thrifting: More Than Bargains
“Thrifting isn’t just about cheap clothes; it’s about discovery,” shared Lutfi from Jakarta, a university student. Across campuses, thrift stores have become havens for self-expression, where Gen Z hunts for unique finds to build an authentic, personal style. Meanwhile, in Malang, the allure of thrifting is entwined with budget constraints but remains a celebration of individuality. As Bagas, a first-jobber from Malang, put it, "I love the stories behind pre-loved items. It feels like connecting to history, not just fashion".
Healing Travel: Escaping to Find Themselves
“Healing trips are not just vacations—they're necessities for sanity,” confessed Fadel, who recently embarked on a solo trip to Bali after months of work stress. The term “healing” resonates deeply in Jakarta, where the city's fast pace leads many to seek solace in nature or less urbanized locales. In contrast, Malang offers a gentler rhythm, where locals find “healing” in day trips to nearby mountains or quaint coffee shops, blending leisure with mindfulness.
These trips often serve as platforms for self-reflection. "It’s not about where you go, but who you are when you come back”
Hobby-Driven Lifestyles: Finding Passion Amidst Chaos
For many young Indonesians, hobbies are a lifeline amid mounting societal pressures. In Jakarta, youth are pursuing band practices and photography as escapes from routine. Meanwhile, Malang's youth revel in badminton leagues and creative side hustles like crafting or baking.
Interestingly, the choice of hobbies reflects local nuances. Urbanites in Jakarta lean toward hobbies that align with social media trends and visibility. In Malang, the focus leans more on practicality and community engagement. “My baking hobby is a way to bring joy to my family, but who knows, it might turn into a business someday,” shared Lutvina, a boutique admin balancing work and family life.
Urban vs. Semi-Urban Dynamics
While the overarching trends resonate across the nation, Jakarta and Malang illustrate distinct manifestations:
Consumerism vs. Connection: Jakarta's youth often engage in trends like thrifting or healing travel to balance their need for visibility on social media with their desire for authentic experiences. In Malang, the trends align more with the tangible joys of community, family, and accessible hobbies.
FOMO vs. Fulfillment: In Jakarta, the fear of missing out (FOMO) often drives consumption, as seen in viral-driven purchases or participation in trends. “Sometimes I join because it’s what everyone’s doing. But I also find something for myself in it,” admits Lutfi from Jakarta. In Malang, there’s less pressure to conform; instead, there’s a slower, more personal embrace of trends.
The Bigger Picture: Seeking Purpose
Beneath the surface, these trends reveal a universal quest for identity, fulfillment, and belonging among Indonesia’s youth. Whether navigating Jakarta's bustling streets or enjoying Malang's serene hills, their stories highlight resilience, creativity, and a refusal to settle for superficiality.
As William from Jakarta sums up, “Trends come and go, but what we make of them defines us”. And that, perhaps, is the truest trend of all.
